Buffalo Thinks Pink walks around the Queen City

Through our training we have been spending a lot of time walking around Buffalo and western New York. We find it helpful to walk different routes, at different times, to keep things interesting. Believe it or not, walking can be a little repetitive!

Before anything, I need to say: BE SAFE! Always walk with at least one buddy, and walk during daylight. If a neighborhood or area seems to become unsafe, turn around!

Delaware Park- Walking around Delaware Park is nice because it is often busy and there is a lot to see during a walk. I mean, come on, how many parks can you walk through and see zoo animals? The animals are joined by bikers, golfers and softball games. At Delaware Park you can walk around Hoyt Lake and then around the golf course. It's a scene that fits every mood! If you want to see other Olmsted Parks in Buffalo that may be good for walking, click here.

Niawanda Park- Walking along the trail in Niawanda Park, in the City of Tonawanda, is a nice setting. If you start near Mississippi Mudds, you go left and walk along the Niagara River and experience a park setting and then move into a more calm, removed area. Not far from that, you walk into the an industrial area, that was an easy walk but not very scenic. The route's benefits were definitely when the trail was along the river, and the fact that the miles were marked to track walking.

Parkside Neighborhood- Walking through the Parkside neighborhood is a treat, because you can enjoy the big, beautiful homes and even swing by a Frank Lloyd Wright's designed home, the Darwin Martin House. This neighborhood is easy to access by Delaware Park, if you want to connect two walking routes together, which you likely will.

Ellicott Creek Park- This Town of Tonawanda Park is nice to swing through, with lots of people around enjoying the playgrounds, camp shelters and trail. It connects to a trail along the canal and is easily accessible by Niagara Falls Boulevard.

Areas we plan to walk in the coming weeks:

Chestnut Ridge Park
Rushford, NY
Letchworth Park
Buffalo's waterfront

Meet the team!

I'd like to introduce you to Team Buffalo Thinks Pink!

First, my sister Caitlin Wolf. Caitlin just moved back to the Queen City after about eight years living in Washington D.C. Caitlin is the person who originally thought we should do the walk, because she heard about her friend's experience.
Donate to Caitlin!

Also on our team is our friend, Charlyn Mancuso. Charlyn has been my sister's best friend since elementary school. Charlyn lives down in Washington D.C. but still has tons of Buffalo pride and is excited to wear the "Buffalo Thinks Pink" name when we get to Cali!
Donate to Charlyn!

The next team member to WOW you is Kaitlyn Healy. Kaitlyn (who will most often be referred to as "Healy") is a fellow Buffalo girl, who loves taking long walks with me around this beautiful city!
Donate to Kaitlyn!

Now that you've met Caitlin, Charlyn and Kaitlyn, I will formally introduce myself. I am Emily Lenihan and I am really excited to keep you about the incredible journey we have ahead of us!

The four of us have a lot to look forward to together in the next few months. We will have each other to lean on when we get discouraged and exhausted. Of course, much more importantly, we will have each other during the good times! We are so excited to head to the west coast together, and be a part of an event much bigger than any of us!

What is Buffalo Thinks Pink?

Welcome to my future hit blog, Buffalo Thinks Pink. I am doing this blog because I am embarking on a journey that will likely lead to a lot of lessons, memories and experiences. I think what I am going to come across over the next few months, and what I have experienced already, are worth sharing. Hopefully you will keep up with me, if you don't, you'll need to walk many miles to find me!

On September 9th, I will begin a three-day walk in San Francisco. The Susan G. Komen "Three Day" walk is to gain awareness of the fight against breast cancer, and to raise money to support the battle against the disease. To participate in the 60-mile walk, I need to raise $2,300 and be mentally and physically ready for quite a challenge!

I tend to get myself into wild ideas and random projects, so when my sister introduced this idea to me, I knew we were bound to get ourselves into something! Luckily, our friends Charlyn and Kaitlyn and joining us too. In this blog I will share our experiences, highs and lows, tips about walking in the summer sun, tips about walking around western New York, and most likely some San Francisco tourism talk!
